FODMAP Heroes

NEXT

Who are the FODMAP heroes ?

Thousands of IBS sufferers have seen a dramatic improvement in their diet thanks to the wonderful team behind the Low FODMAP diet.

So who are the people who have bought so much relief to so many IBS sufferers ? We take time to thank the team behind the Low FODMAP Diet, and also look at those who are taking this work further.  Too often the laborious  behind the scenes work goes unmentioned, however in this instance would be wrong not to do so.

Advance Australia Fair

Australia has a burgeoning reputation scientifically, and it is in this country we begin.  A country with such a small population should not perpetually over achieve, however Australians have been doing so for a very long time now. The Low FODMAP diet was primarily developed by Peter R Gibson and Susan J Shepherd from Monash University (Victoria, Australia). In 2009 they had a very important study published in Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (Volume 25, Issue 2, Article first published online: 10/14/2009).

From that point onwards the diet has exploded around the world.  While the Low FODMAP diet has not wiped out IBS or even cured it, it has given around 75% of sufferers a new lease of life, which in IBS terms is an unprecedented result.  Dr Sue Shepard, has wonderful website called ‘Shepard Works, which is highly recommended and she and Peter Gibson continue to improve and update the Low FODMAP diet.  The latest copy of their ‘Low FODMAP diet guide is available by clicking on the links to either Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk on our Low FODMAP Books pages…  Click here for Low FODMAP Books.

It is fair to say that both Dr Shepard and Peter Gibson  have certainly lived up to the words of the founder of the University:

Sir John Monash

"...equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community."

Promoting IBS Freedom

Another great advocate of the diet is the American Dietician Patsy Danehy Catsos. Her special area of interest is gastrointestinal health. Her trailblazing book, IBS--Free at Last! (Pond Cove Press, 2009), introduced U.S. health care providers and consumers to FODMAP-restricted diet therapy for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Patsy is the editor of the blog IBSfree.net, and an expert contributor to Sharecare.com, an interactive social Q/A platform created by Jeff Arnold and Dr. Mehmet Oz in partnership with Harpo Studios, HSW International, Sony Pictures Television, and Discovery Communications. Ms. Catsos earned a B.S. in Nutritional Science from Cornell University and an M.S. in Nutrition at Boston University. She completed her internship at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital. She is a professional member of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of American and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly known as the American Dietetic Association); she is past-president of the Maine Dietetic Association. ‘IBS-Free at last’ is highly recommended to anyone thinking about the low FODMAP diet.  It is one of the best written IBS books available.  It’s primary focus is the Low FODMAP diet, however it is wonderfully detailed book which is beautifully written and incredibly helpful.  This book is also available if you follow this link;  Please click here for ‘IBS--Free at last !
